The pantHer gymnasts have been busy! For the first time in decades, they became conference champions after going undefeated in the SCGL and outscoring every team at the championship meet. Our pantHERs had the honor of sharing the podium with several talented gymnasts, including childhood friends from the other schools. More About Gymnastics Scores High in Last MeetThe Western Panthers took on the Lumen Christi Titans in a challenging matchup on Wednesday. Despite a strong first half where the Panthers trailed by just six points (10-16), the team struggled to find their offensive rhythm in the second half, ultimately falling to the Titans 35-16.Despite the tough loss, the Panthers displayed determination and teamwork. More About Western Panthers Fall to Lumen Christi Titans in Tough MatchupLast night our Lady Panthers travelled to Grand Ledge to take on the Comets. We had a long bus ride there, but we were ready to play and came in with a desire to do well overall, be a threat offensively, and a rebounding threat. With these things in mind we made goals to do each and every one of these things. In the first quarter we led in scoring 14-0. In the second quarter we tried to run a couple of different plays that we executed very well and ended the quarter up 19-6. At the half, we wanted to challenge ourselves as a team. Something we have never done before. We wanted to get every person on our team to score before the end of the game. With this plan we came into the second half excited to see if we could achieve this goal. Right off the bat we were able to get 8/9 players points on the board. From here on we ran our plays, made sure to get open opportunities, and most importantly looked for our last player to score. We ended the third quarter up 27-9. In the last quarter
More About Freshman Girls Basketball Defeats Grand LedgeWestern Freshman Boys Basketball won the rematch with Pennfield on Thursday, 46-37, ending a 13-game losing streak in the process. Jayce Thurman took over for the Panthers, racking up 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting to go with six steals, three rebounds and two assists. Thurman scored seven of his points in the third quarter to break the game open for Western, which finished 3-15 on the year. Colin Savicke scored 16 points in his best all-around performance of the season. Savicke also cashed in a season-high eight rebounds, two steals, an assist and a blocked shot. Cam Fullerton worked a clogged Pennfield interior for just two points on the game, but he stuffed the score sheet with five rebounds, four steals, two assists and a blocked shot. More About Freshman Boys End Season with a Win!Wednesday evening the girls made a quick trip across town to JCMS. The last match-up was a nailbiter, so the girls were excited for a close game. They got their wish during the first quarter, which ended up being a defensive battle ending in a score of 8-2. The second quarter the girls got rolling and took an impressive lead of 20-7. The Panthers never looked back and ended up winning handily with a 33-10 score. All the players worked hard and contributed to the big win. Kennedi Mohr showed up to play with 9 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Phoebe Gin was, once again, relentless on defense, grabbing 7 steals and scoring 6 points. More About 8th Grade B Girls Basketball Defeats LumenOn Wednesday evening, the Lady Panthers embarked on a challenging journey to Lumen for what turned out to be a fierce battle. Anticipating an intense game, we were met with Lumen's strength and tenacity right from the start. It was a grueling match, marked by numerous injuries along the way. Despite the obstacles, our team displayed unwavering determination and resilience. While our first loss was difficult to accept, we understand that adversity only serves to make us stronger. The final score was 27-31. Teagan Dean led the charge with an impressive 10 points and 4 rebounds. Kylie Vancalbergh delivered clutch 3-pointers at pivotal moments, contributing significantly to the team's performance. More About 7th Grade B Girls Basketball Battled LumenLooking to avenge a 25 point loss earlier this season to a very tall and athletic Hastings team, the Panthers came out playing aggressive and very solid defense. Our defensive and rebounding effort was outstanding all night! The first quarter was a defensive slugfest as both teams looked to establish their offensive identity. An early basket by Zavi Jackson gave the Panthers an early lead but after a couple of late baskets in the quarter by Hastings, we found ourselves down 4-2 at the quarter break. The second quarter was more of the same as we got a basket from Morgan Smith and free throws from Claire Luke and Gracie Shrock. Unfortunately, we were down 10-6 at the intermission. More About 7th Grade Girls A Game Recap 2/18 vs. HastingsTuesday night the 8th grade girls made the chilly trek to Hastings. It took a few quarters to shake off the long weekend break, but eventually the Panthers pulled it together and kicked it into gear The team only had 7 girls for the game, but all 7 worked hard and contributed in great ways to the big win. More About 8th Grade B Girls Basketball Defeated HastingsThe Panthers hosted the Coldwater Cardinals Tuesday night in a 1st versus 2nd matchup in the I8. The Cardinals started the game hot from 3, making 3 of their first 4 attempts. The game was tied after the 1st quarter of play. Western responded with much tighter defense in the second quarter holding the Cardinals to just 5 points in the frame and extending their lead to 7 points by half. The Panthers would hardly look back after the break. Coldwater got as close as 4 points in the second half, but only briefly. Western extended its lead back out to 8 points and held it there for the remainder of the game. Strong free throw shooting down the stretch sealed the win for the Panthers. The close out I8 play with a trip to Pennfield on Friday night.
More About Varsity Girls Basketball Wins I8 TitleIn a hard-fought battle on the hardwood, the 7th grade B team and Hastings B team faced off in a nail-biting contest that had fans on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer.The B team took an early lead, heading into halftime up 10-2, showcasing strong defensive play and sharp shooting. However, Hastings fought back in the second half, closing the gap and ultimately forcing overtime after a tense fourth quarter.In the extra period, Hastings found an extra gear, edging out the B team with key defensive stops. We split with Holt as we had wins at 1 Singles Isaac Chilson 8-5, 2 Singles Drew Gillett 8-2, 3 Singles Tyler Gilbert 9-8(7-4) and 1 Doubles Luke Collins and Brady Smith 8-3.
