Ryan Good takes down 400m dash record by more than a second
With qualifiers in every event, Western was well represented at Jackson's Withington Stadium last night in the running of last night's Selby Classic. This was especially evident in a lightning fast 400m dash, where four of the competitors were Western Panthers, and junior Ryan Good destroyed the school record.
While DeMarcus Hill, Isaac Fullerton, and Trevin Warner all ran at or faster than their fastest times ever, the electricity in the race between Ryan and Lumen Christi's Johnny Walters got the most attention.
The 400m is Johnny's longest normal distance, and Ryan's shortest. And, because the 400m is run entirely in lanes and has a tw0-turn stagger, it's difficult to see how close two racers are to one another until the final straightaway. With about 150 meters to go Johnny had about a five meter lead, but at that point Ryan shifted gears and, stride by stride, gained on the leader until the two leaned into the finish line and the photo indicated Ryan had won the race.
Both runners set new school records in the event, and will race in multiple events this Saturday at their respective State Finals meets. Western will compete at the Division-2 meet at Hamilton, while Lumen Christi goes to Kent City for the Division-3 Finals.
Western's previous school record was set in 2010 by Austin Maynard, the cousin of another of Western's Selby champions, Braden VanCalbergh. Braden comfortably cleared 14'-6" in the pole vault, and once again had some good jumps at 15'.
The Panthers ended the night with a further show of quarter-mile strength, with Parker Yokom, Jacob Wielenga, DeMarcus Hill, and Isaace Fullerton winning the 4x400m relay in a time of 3:28.04.
