The Western Ladies’ Track & Field team wrapped up the full team championship season with a competitive performance at the Selby Classic Tuesday evening. The meet invites the top dozen competitors of the county in distance and field events and the top nine in laned sprint events. We were honored to have an athlete in all but one competition, showing the depth and growth of our young team this season. It was a beautiful night to compete, create memories and send off our Seniors.

In the field, Tori Huang (12th) and AJ Sharp (7th) got things started with a tough pole vault competition. Charlie Damron soared to a new long jump PB of 15’ 0”, earning her a 6th place finish. Teammates Natalie Gough (13’10”) and Kaytlynn Sawyer (13’7.25”) earned 9th and 10th place honors.  Ella Wilcox focused on high jump, hitting 4’10” and received a 5th place medal for her efforts. Kaitlynn Knack and Zoe Magnusson got things started in throws at discus, placing 3rd and 11th with consistent throws. Knack went on to place second in shot put.

On the track, the 4x800 team of Bridget Fullerton, Madisyn Blair, Lillian Coppernoll and Natalie Kuhl demonstrated their State Qualifying teamwork placing second. Kuhl went on to medal 2nd place in the 800 (2:25.0 PB) and Fullerton  medaled in 5th in the same race (2:30.30). Rounding out the distance squad was Blair in the 1600, racing to a solid 5th place medal (5:43.13) placing higher than seeded.

The sprint crew saw a pair of PBs from Seniors AnnaKay Marshall (6th, 27.75) and Izzy Schlundt (7th, 27.86) in the 200. Marshall teamed up with Damron, Lydia Coleman and Huang to earn PB times in the 4x100 (5th) and 4x200 (5th). Gough, Coppernoll, Damron and Wilcox received a 3rd place medal for their hard work in the 4x400.

The team and coaches send best wishes to Senior Emrick Boobyer for a quick recovery after taking a hard fall in the 100 hurdles.

Next up is the MHSAA State Finals meet for our 4x800 team on Saturday.  The ladies have had a fantastic season with PB marks every meet, invite wins/runner up finishes and a co-Conference Championship; so many accomplishments to be proud of and it has been the honor of our coaching staff (Becky Good, Stacy Cooper, Amy Jayne, Brad Vancalbergh, Eric Magnusson and Mark Good) to be along for the ride. Thanks for a great season, Team!
