The Western Panthers opened District play in dominant fashion Wednesday night, shutting out Harper Creek 5-0 in the opening round of the District Tournament at the Panther Bowl.
Western wasted little time getting on the board as Lola Berdiner found the back of the net just 7:29 into the match off an assist from Rayah Hitt to give the Panthers an early 1-0 lead. Western would carry that advantage into halftime after a strong defensive effort kept the Beavers off the scoreboard.
The Panthers came out firing in the second half as Berdiner struck again just 1:30 after halftime, once again with an assist from Hitt, extending the lead to 2-0. Western continued to pour on the pressure from there, adding three more goals to put the game out of reach. Berdiner added two more goals to complete an incredible four-goal performance, while Madison Brandt also added a goal for the Panthers. Assists in the second half came from Brandt, Rachel Thomson, and Jordan Goolsby.
Berdiner’s huge night was historic, as her fourth goal of the game gave her 34 goals on the season, breaking the previous Western single-season school record of 32 goals set by Kristy Bowden.
Western controlled much of the play throughout the night, outshooting Harper Creek 18-6. Aubree Allen anchored the net for the Panthers and finished with five saves to earn the shutout.
The Panthers also received a strong defensive effort from the back line of Chloee Tyler, Rachel Thomson, Ellie Hackworth, Layla Hull, Abby Kubish, and Lauren Nally, who helped keep the Beavers scoreless. Sophomore Kylie Vancalburg also had a strong performance in the holding midfield role, helping Western control possession and limit Harper Creek’s chances.
Lola Berdiner was named Offensive Player of the Game for her record-breaking four-goal performance, while Rachel Thomson earned Defensive Player of the Game honors for her strong play on the back line.
With the win, Western improves to 13-3-2 overall and advances to the District Semifinals, where the Panthers will face the winner of the Jackson High/Mason matchup. The semifinal game will be played Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at Mason. Harper Creek finishes the night at 11-4-3 overall after the District loss.
