The Western Track and Field Ladies were surprised by an unexpected invitation to compete at MITCA Team State on Friday May 23. This honor was a great opportunity for the athletes who attended to chase after PR times, distances and heights one more time. Sophomore Kaytlynn Sawyer ran the 100 three times due to a glitch in the starting system and came out with a PR in that event and the 400. Sophomore Charlie Damron had an excellent performance in the 200 and 400, improving her PR times in both events. Sophomore Natalie Kuhl ran well with the more experienced last heat and set a new PR in the 1600. Freshman Laurel Clevenger-Grimsley was impressive in her racing strategy in the 800, setting a new PR for her last race of the season. Sophomore Lillian Coppernoll raced a speedy Season Best in the 200 and rounding out notable performances was Melaina Magnusson with a Season Best (1 second away from a PR!) in the 1600.
The Selby Classic is next for several on the team, earning a chance to compete with the area’s best on Tuesday and we look forward to cheering our State Qualifiers on the 31st.
