Western Track and Field competed at the MHSAA Regionals hosted by Williamston on Friday.  The venue was a nice change from Mason, providing the women’s team with the best possible opportunity to PR in many events and run/jump/throw for a chance at the State Finals.  

In Field Events, Senior Addison Singleton threw a PR distance of 118 feet, placing 3rd and qualifying for State on her very last throw!  Singleton also threw a PR in shot put, placing 4th.  Senior Danielle Losey placed 25 in discus with Freshman Kaitie Knack showing a solid 10th place finish in shot put. Rounding out the field events were Freshman Aykina Weatherspoon placing 6th in long jump, and Sophomores Ella Wilcox and Lillian Coppernoll placing 9th and 15th in the high jump, respectively.

On the Running Events side,  Weatherspoon shone with a PR in the 100 hurdles, placing first by a narrow margin and also qualifying for the State tournament. She joined Juniors Aivree Baker, Lydia Coleman and Anna Kay Marshall to run to a 6th place finish in the 4x100 relay and also competed on the 4x200 team of Coleman, Marshall and Sophomore Charlie Damron for a PR time and 5th place.

Damron and Wilcox both ran exceptionally well in the open 400 with PR times and Wilcox medaling in 4th place and Damron in 9th.  They joined Senior Bertha Quiroga and Freshman Natalee Gough in the 4x400, placing 3rd and earning yet another PR.  Gough PR’d in the 200 prelims as well.

Quiroga and Sophomore Natalie Kuhl ran outstanding PR times in the 800, placing 3rd and 4th in that event.  Those 2 also ran the 4x800 with Freshman Bridget Fullerton and Wilcox to place 3rd and smash their previous PR by 9 seconds.  Fullerton went on to place 8th in the 1600 with Sophomore Tori Wielenga bested her time in the 1600 with another new PR, placing 13th.

The Lady Panthers placed 5th out of 16 teams, showing grit and determination that is rare for a team so young.  We are looking forward to what the next few years will bring with this team!
