The Western Middle School Boys Track Team won the I8 Conference Meet Title on Wednesday, finishing with 151 team points. Northwest finished second with 101 points.
The Western distance crew led the way for Western on the day.
Micah Good won the 400 Meter Run with a time of 56.90 and anchored the 4x400 Relay Team (3:58.96) and the 4x800 Relay Team (9:41.42) which both finished first as well.
Logan Cristian matched Good by winning the 1600 Meter Run (4:51.07) and joined on both the winning 4x400 Relay and the 4x800 Relay Teams.
Not to be outdone, Leland Sowle won the 3200 Meter Run (10:47.18) and also ran with the winning 4x400 Relay and 4x800 Relay Teams.
Good, Cristian and Sowle all secured personal bests in their individual running events.
Josiah Rivera completed the 4x800 Relay Team, and also took second in the 800 Meter Run (2:19.86) and fourth in the 1600 Meter Run (5:26.07).
Christian Johnson and Kannon Kelch rounded out the winning 4x400 Meter Relay Team. Johnson finished third in the 400 Meter Run (1:00.23) and sixth in the Shot Put (35’7.5”), both personal bests.
The Western sprinters also took center stage and battled a tough short-track field.
Jett Archer won the 70 Meter Dash (8.82) and combined with Dominique Galloway, Liam Maull and Alexander Fausz to take second place in the 4x100 Meter Relay (49.61). Archer also took fourth place in the Long Jump (17’10”).
Logan Young took first place in the Long Jump (18’8”) before taking third place in the 100 Meter Dash (12.09).
Young led the three Panthers who all scored in the High Jump. Young cleared 5’0” in the High Jump, with Joel Toyer (4’10”) and Wyatt Griswold (4’10”) taking sixth and seventh place as well.
Toyer, Griswold, Liam Maull and Derek Boldt worked together to take fifth place in the 4x200 Meter Relay (1:53.82). Boldt took fifth place in the 55 Meter Hurdles (9.87). Toyer finished seventh in the 200 Meter Hurdles (30.87).
Alexander Fausz finished fifth in the 200 Meter Hurdles (29.59) and cleared 7’6” to secure sixth place in the Pole Vault.
Dominique Galloway took fifth place in the 70 Meter Dash (9.23) and blitzed a 27.25 to snag seventh place in the 200 Meter Dash from the second heat.
James Harris qualified for Regionals by throwing 37’4” in the Shot Put, finishing fourth in the process.
Lucas Johnston took fourth in the 3200 Meter Run (11:49.80) and seventh place in the 800 Meter Run (2:36.40), both personal bests.
Leo Zhang set a personal best in the 3200 Meter Run (12:38.05) and finished seventh.
The Western Lady Panthers battled and took second place against a deep Harper Creek team as well as the rest of the I8 Conference. Western finished with 134.5 points to Harper Creek’s 172.5.
Kylie Vancalbergh again set the tone for Western, winning the Pole Vault (8’0”) and the 70 Meter Dash (9.87), and finishing second in the 200 Meter Dash (28.67).
All four Lady Panther relay teams finished no worse than second place.
Maidsyn Blair, Claire Kuhl, Mia Zischke and Whitney Parker combined to win the 4x400 Meter Relay (4:51.69) to cap off the evening.
Blair ran two more times, winning the 1600 Meter Run with a time of 5:48.90 and finishing second in the 800 Meter Run at 2:42.50.
Harper Backinger, Claire Kuhl, Whitney Parker and Kennedi Baum took second place in the 4x800 Meter Relay with a time of 11:40.28.
Harper Backinger took fifth place in the 200 Meter Hurdles at 35.97.
Kuhl took fifth in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 1:10.53.
Ashlynn Daly, Harper Backinger, Mallie Backinger and Zacariah Akines finished second in the 4x200 Meter Relay with a time of 2:07.01.
Daly, Mallie Backinger, Bella Nowery and Braelynn Schaffer took second in the 4x100 Meter Relay as well, coming in at 57.86.
Mallie Backinger finished in fifth place in the 200 Meter Dash (29.68), while Schaffer took fifth place in the 100 Meter Dash (14.34).
Nowery placed sixth in the 100 Meter Dash with a time of 14.37.
Alivia Stahley won the 3200 Meter Run with a time of 13:53.53 after finishing fourth in the 1600 Meter Run (6:27.80).
Zaviana Jackson placed in three events. Jackson jumped 14’5” in the Long Jump, taking third place. Jackson also took fourth place in both the 400 Meter Dash (1:10.33) and the 800 Meter Run (2:48.16).
Whitney Parker battled through an ankle injury to finish sixth in the 800 Meter Run (2:55.15) in addition to her two relays.
Georgia Addleman also fought off a leg injury to place third in the High Jump, clearing 4’6”. Kiyami Eddy placed seventh in the High Jump at 4’2”.
Both teams combined to produce 36 Personal Best performances.
The Western Middle School Boys and Girls teams start a busy week on Monday at the Saline Relays.
