Western Boys and Girls Middle School Track teams both completed 6-0 dual seasons by defeating Northwest on Wednesday. The Panther Boys won their closest meet of the season with an 87-76 win over the Mounties. The Lady Panthers completed their perfect dual season with a 103-47 victory.
Leland Sowle won the 3200 Meter Run (11:14.09), as Lucas Johnston (12:29.24) and Leo Zhang (13:18.97) finished third and fourth, to give the Panthers an 82-76 lead heading into the final event of the day, sealing the Boys victory.
Sowle also finished third in the 800 Meter Run (2:20.06) and helped the 4x800 Meter Relay team win the opening running event of the day with a time of (9:09.20).
Micah Good, Logan Cristian and Josiah Rivera joined Sowle in the 4x800 Meter Relay victory. Good and Cristian teamed up again with Christian Johnson and Kannon Kelch to win the 4x400 Meter Relay (4:05.54).
Good won the 1600 Meter Run (5:06.05), while Cristian took first place in the 800 Meter Run (2:11.90). Josiah Rivera finished second in the 800 Meter Run (2:14.55), while Brayden Watts took third place in the 1600 Meter Run (6:18.49).
Logan Young won two events on the day, finishing first in the High Jump (5’2”), and first in the 100 Meter Run (12.00).
Western swept the High Jump behind Young, Wyatt Griswold (2nd, 5’0”), Joel Toyer (3rd, 4’10”) and Derek Boldt (4th, 4’8”).
Christian Johnson won the 400 Meter Run (1:02.33) and finished second in the Shot Put (34’2.5). Birthday Boy Isaac Craig finished third in the Shot Put with a season-best 34’1”.
Leo Zhang took third in the 400 Meter Run (1:10.27) and Devin Hill finished fourth (1:10.50).
Jett Archer had two second-place finishes on the day, running an 8.76 in the 70 Meter Dash and posting a Long Jump of 16’8.5”.
Dominique Galloway finished third in the 100 Meter Dash (12.80) and fourth in the Long Jump (15’0”).
Wyatt Griswold (10.10) and Derek Boldt (10.20) finished 3-4 in the 55 Meter Hurdles, while Alexander Fausz (30.64), Boldt (30.94) and Joel Toyer (31.36) finished 2-3-4 in the 200 Meter Hurdles.
Fausz also set a personal best in the Pole Vault, finishing second with a vault of 7’6”. Ethan Robinson finished third at 6’6”.
On the Ladies side, Kylie Vancalbergh stole the show, winning three events and setting two school records for the Panthers.
Valcalbergh broke her own school record in the 70 Meter Dash with a time of 9.82. She doubled-down by breaking the school record in the Pole Vault with a height of 8’7”. And for gravy, she won the 200 Meter Dash with a time of 28.54.
Madisyn Blair won the 800 Meter Run (2:42.00) and the 1600 Meter Run (5:41.22).
Western swept the 800 Meter Run with Zavaina Jackson (2:47.80), Whitney Parker (2:55.33) and Kennedi Baum (3:23.49) finishing 2-3-4 behind Blair for the Lady Panthers.
Alivia Stahley took first in the 3200 Meter Run with a time of 14:53.49 and helped the 4x800 Meter Relay team take first as well, alongside Mia Zischke, Harper Backinger and Whitney Parker (11:57.90).
Georgia Addleman won the High Jump, clearing 4’8”, and anchored the other two winning relay teams. Addleman joined Harper Backinger, Braelynn Schaffer and Claire Kuhl to win the 4x200 Meter Relay (2:00.99). Addleman then joined Harper Backinger, Mallie Backinger and Mia Zischke to win the 4x400 Meter Relay (5:03.63).
Mia Zischke also finished fourth in the High Jump (3’10”).
Braelynn Schaffer and Bella Nowery went 1-2 in the 100 Meter Dash with times of 14.49 and 14.72, Schaffer also took second place in the 70 Meter Dash with a time of 10.18. Nowery took second place in the Pole Vault with a height of 6’0”.
Nowery also led the assault on the 400 Meter Dash, winning the event with a time of 1:09.03. Allie Coppernoll (1:09.41) and Claire Kuhl (1:12.07) took second and third place for Western.
Zaviana Jackson (13’3.5”), Claire Kuhl (13’0”) and Allie Coppernoll (12’10.5”) went 1-2-3 in the Long Jump.
Coppernoll took third place in the 200 Meter Dash (29.35), while Jackson took fourth place (29.64).
Kiyami Eddy ran a personal best time of 11.40 to finish third in the 55 Meter Hurdles. Eddy also finished second in the 200 Meter Hurdles with a time of 38.96.
Whitney Parker threw a personal best 24’2.5” to finish second in the Shot Put. Skylar Harris also threw a personal best of 20’10.5” to finish fourth.
Both teams combined to produce 61 personal-best efforts in individual events, on a warm sunny day after limited practice over the previous week.
Western Middle School Track travels to Northwest for the I8 Conference Meet on Wednesday, May 14.
