The varsity softball team opened their season at home against Napoleon Tuesday night. The team returns just five players from last season, but are surrounded by young talent.
Game one, freshman Amber Gregory led the team from the mound striking out 10 Pirates. She didn't give up a single walk in seven innings. She allowed just three hits with no earned runs. The offense was led by Kenadee Golas with two hits and Gregory hit an RBI triple! Maycee DeGroat, Savanna Vo, and Bayli Stewart collected hits for the Panthers. The team's small ball game and speed helped the Panthers score runs! Final score Western 5, Napoleon 3.
Game two, freshman Audrina Bisonet took the mound. In five innings, she struck out eight and didn't walk a batter! Gregory pitched the final two innings, sitting down five more batters! Pitchers worked very hard tonight! Offensively the team came back in the bottom of the sixth when Mia Messer hit a shot to right field! Then Bayli Stewart hit a double and with two strikes Kenadee Golas hit a homer over the left field fence. This tied the game at 9. Stewart collected three hits, Golas, two, Alivia Ott, Maycee DeGroat, and Audrina Bisonet each added hits. Ott caught a solid 14 innings receiving a compliment from the umpire. The Panthers ran out of daylight ending in a 9-9 tie.
The team is 1-0-1 overall. They will travel to Charlotte on Thursday!
Thanks to our parents and fans for all the help tonight with the pressbox, concessions, food, and space heaters!! We appreciate you!
