Last night the western panthers took on West Catholic at home for our first game of the season. We were nervous and excited to play our first game and were ready to play tough and give it our all. We came out tense in the first quarter of the game, unable to make any shots as we struggled to find our place on offense against a zone defense. Once we got the hang of things, we began to feel more comfortable playing tough defense and taking chances on offense. In the second quarter we were able to score on the inside as Veronica Allen put 2 points on the board for our team. At the half we rallied in the locker room and had positive outlooks on the rest of our game. We aimed to take open shots, look for open passes, and continue to play great defense. In the third quarter, we took our words from the locker room and put them into action. Sylvia Bivens found an opening for another 2, and Raelynn Ahrens was able to shoot twice inside for 4. With more confidence and looks on the inside, getting around West Catholics defense we took to the scoreboard even more in the fourth quarter. Veronica Allen put up another 2 points where Sylvia Bivens and Suzanne St. John helped out with 2 points each. Even though we were late to join the aggressive play, we came back to end the game 16-28 against West Catholic. Being our first game, we aren’t going to let the loss get to us. We are going to go out and work hard against St. John’s on Monday. Come out and support our Western Freshman Girls in St. John’s for our second game. Thanks to all who came out and supported us at home! Go Panthers!
