Parma Western boys soccer traveled to Coldwater Tuesday night to take on the Cardinals, currently ranked No. 7 in the state. Western defended well for much of the opening half, keeping the Cardinals off the scoreboard until about 10 minutes remained. Coldwater finally broke through with a well-finished goal off a cross and then added another with just two minutes remaining, sending Western into halftime trailing 2-0. Western changed its approach at halftime and responded quickly. Junior Landon Lasky played a ball through to senior Luke Harrington, who sprinted onto it and used a light touch to slot the ball past the Coldwater goalkeeper, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Coldwater answered about five minutes later to make it 3-1, but Western refused to go away. Freshman Ethan Robinson was brought down inside the Cardinals’ penalty area, earning Western a penalty kick. Lasky stepped up confidently and converted from the spot for his first career varsity goal, bringing Western back within one at 3-2. Just minutes later, Western nearly found the equalizer. Senior Eli Parker delivered a corner that found Lasky, whose attempt was denied by an outstanding save from the Coldwater goalkeeper. Western continued to press high and play bravely in search of the tying goal. With the field wet from the conditions, an unfortunate slip allowed Coldwater to break the other way, and the Cardinals converted the opportunity to extend their lead to 4-2. With approximately five minutes remaining, lightning forced the match to be called, making 4-2 the final score. Despite the result, Western showed resilience against one of the state’s top-ranked teams, responding twice after falling behind and continuing to push for a result late into the match.
