Parma Western traveled to Vicksburg High School on Saturday morning to take on the Bulldogs, battling back from a two-goal halftime deficit to earn a 2-2 draw. The game got off to a difficult start for Western when the Panthers conceded a free kick just outside the penalty area in the opening five minutes. A Vicksburg player bent the ensuing free kick around the Western wall and into the net to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 advantage. Vicksburg doubled its lead roughly 10 minutes later following another free kick from outside the box. The initial ball was headed down by a Western defender, but Vicksburg was first to the loose ball and finished the opportunity to make it 2-0. Western went into halftime trailing by two, but after making tactical adjustments at the break, the Panthers came out firing. Western erased the deficit with two goals in the opening three minutes of the second half. The first came when senior Luke Herrington fired a shot off the crossbar. Peyton Munz reacted quickly to the rebound and headed it into the net to cut the Vicksburg lead to 2-1. Almost immediately after the ensuing kickoff, Western regained possession and found senior Sam Heydenburg, who unleashed a shot from outside the penalty area into the upper-left corner to level the match at 2-2. Western was also forced to adjust its personnel throughout the match. Senior Eli Parker suffered an injury in the first half and was unable to return, while Heydenburg was also forced out with an injury after scoring the equalizer. The Panthers called upon players from the bench to fill those roles, and they responded with an outstanding effort as Western continued pushing for the go-ahead goal. Despite controlling much of the second half and creating opportunities to complete the comeback, Western was unable to find the final goal, and the match finished in a 2-2 draw. Western returns to action Tuesday when the Panthers travel to Coldwater for another league matchup.
